Have you liked Oberlin today?
We are pleased to announce that we will be hosting Oberlin College & Conservatory’s first-ever #obietwitterview on our official Twitter, @OberlinCon, on Wednesday April 3rd at 4:30 pm!
What’s a Twitterview? Good question! A Twitterview is an interview, conducted over Twitter. This particular #obietwitterview will feature four Obies:
Rafiq Bhatia ‘10 - @rafiqbhatia - Genre-bending Guitarist/Composer
Marek Poliks ‘11 - @MarekPoliks - New/Contemporary Composer
Eastman Presser ‘14 - @steam_ship - Composer/TIMARA/aka ‘Steam Ship’
We’re excited! @OberlinCon, managed by @willroane, will host the interview, making our participants feel at home even as they participate from across the United States.
The subject of this #obietwitterview is:
Future/Music/Innovation/Music/Business/Music: Limits? What Limits?
You can follow the #obietwitterview by searching for the hashtag on Twitter, or by following all of the participants (and @OberlinCon)!
Early this morning, there was a report of a person wearing a hood and robe resembling a KKK outfit between South and the Edmonia Lewis Center and in the vicinity of African Heritage House. This report is being investigated by both Safety and Security and the Oberlin Police Department. This event, in addition to the series of other hate-related incidents on campus, has precipitated our decision to suspend formal classes and all non-essential activities for today, Monday, March 4, 2013, and gather for a series of discussions of the challenging issues that have faced our community in recent weeks.
We hope today will allow the entire community—students, faculty, and staff—to make a strong statement about the values that we cherish here at Oberlin: inclusion, respect for others, and a strong and abiding faith in the worth of every individual. Indeed, the strength of Oberlin comes from our belief that diversity and openness enriches us all, and enhances the educational mission at its core.
We ask that all students, faculty and staff participate in the events planned for today:
12PM | Lord Lounge, Afrikan Heritage House
Teach-in led by Africana Studies Department
2PM | Wilder Bowl
Demonstration of solidarity
3:30PM | Finney Chapel
Community convocation: “We Stand Together” (previously scheduled for Wednesday 3/6 at 12PM)
When faced with difficult situations, Oberlin has consistently met the challenges and affirmed its commitment to the highest quality of education and the noblest aspirations of its community members. We believe that today’s events—and our ongoing work and discussions—will strengthen Oberlin and will strengthen us all.

This weekend is Parents & Family Weekend. There are a lot of great events happening on campus! Check out the calendar for mixers, concerts, info sessions..etc! Hope everyone has a great weekend! Let us know what events you go to!
Parents and Family Weekend is happening! What are you planning to do?
The Oberlin family is big and grand, obnoxious but lovable, much like our blood family… No matter who we were born around or who we choose to keep around us, they’re a part of who we are and what we become. Oberlin is a place that changes you and by extension, those around you, so it seems only natural to create an opportunity to connect our families together over this thing all of us have here: Oberlin.
The only thing is that many of these activities involved us translating and projecting pieces of Oberlin to folks who aren’t here to better include them in what we’re doing every day. That’s totally fine, but it’s not deep or sustained beyond the activity itself. The internet is ephemeral and we’re relying on people who are online to be a part of what we’re trying to share. And this is where this awesome project comes in. We’re bringing Oberlin to you, families. Oberlin through eyes you already care about. Enter: the Oberlin Family Postcard Project.
This is seriously gonna rock. Read this blog post and join us over the weekend.
This project is so cool. This project is so Oberlin. Check it out! Be a part of something big!

The new first-years arrived and began moving in yesterday! We’re so, so excited for all the adventures they are about to have (and, surely, already having). Be sure to check out @oberlincollege on Twitter (and Instagram!) for more updates, as well as the main Oberlin College Tumblr.
And, of course, this Tumblr and @oberlincon on Twitter for more Conservatory-specialized content!
This is our favorite video from the Rubin Institute at Oberlin College back in January. Why? Well, Tim Page’s keynote, “Be Your Own Critic,” was great. But the top reason it’s our favorite? … because we are in it! Larry is featured at 33:34; Arlene steps in at 35:30; and we are both in a final audience panel at 43:45. It was great fun. Check it out.
